Estimating the dynamics and prospects for solar energy usage in local markets

Experts of Civitta estimated the dynamics and prospects for solar energy using in Kaliningrad region, Russia.

The global market of solar energy in recent years shows the rapid growth of 22% in 2015, 23% in 2014. Solar market leaders are China, Japan and the United States. In the US solar market grew 20 times from 2006 to 2016, today the sun's energy as a source of electricity is used by 0.7% of the population.

Despite the huge and inexhaustible facilities of alternative sources of energy in Russia (about 30% of the total volume of the country's energy resources can be obtained through the using of renewable sources), the current consumption is inconspicuous. However, Kaliningrad region is one of the leading Russian regions in terms of alternative sources of energy commission, including heat pumps and solar panels.

According to experts, about 250 residential buildings are equipped with solar panels and use the sun's energy for electricity and heating. Against the backdrop of sloppy weather condition in Kaliningrad, experts recommend to install and use solar panels in conjunction with gasoline generators, wind generators or with the mains connection to the city.

Relatively low electricity prices, high cost of equipment, as well as the lack of real government support mechanisms for renewable energy, alternative energy does not find the proper development impulse in Russia. The payback period for solar in private housing projects in the Kaliningrad region is 5-8 averagely.

From 2011 to December 2014, experts noted the growth in demand for solar panels in Kaliningrad region. In 2015 the sharp drop in demand was the result of the significant rise in prices for solar panels equipment.

Civitta experts forecast the growth of unconventional energy market in Kaliningrad region in the coming years since the development of technologies and improving battery efficiency, therefore the payback period is reducing. The popularity of environmental projects in the region is growing and the rate of real estate development, including construction on infrastructure-isolated areas, is increasing annually.
