Red Bull Mobile — Creating a data roaming service that won’t drain your wallet

The background:

Red Bull Media House is a renowned company that made its mark in the market over 30 years ago by creating a new product category: energy drinks. It is known for its unique marketing approach, which is deeply rooted in supporting sports, music, dance, and an adrenaline-fueled lifestyle. By the end of 2022, the company employed over 15,000 people across 175 countries and had an annual turnover of nearly 10 billion EUR.

Red Bull Mobile, a subsidiary of Red Bull Media House, has operated for over a decade. It focuses on various innovative digital solutions related to mobile services, either country-specific or global. In 2019, Red Bull Mobile decided to enter a new market, Oman, marking the launch of a new MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) that aligns with Red Bull’s core values. We were invited to support the creation of mobile self-care apps for this new venture.

Overview of our collaboration:

Our journey began when Red Bull’s digital marketing partner in the Middle East invited us to collaborate on one project. We were honoured to work with Red Bull, a company famous for “giving wings to people and ideas.” Our initial collaboration was highly successful, launching a minimum viable product just three months after receiving the green light. This paved the way for several further initiatives, including developing a global data roaming app.

The primary value proposition of this solution is to offer great value-for-money data roaming services for frequent travellers. To initiate the project, we travelled to Austria to discuss its requirements with their local telecom partner. However, midway through the project, something unexpected happened: COVID-19. As you can guess, it was not the best time to release an app for travellers. We had to adapt and scale it down, making something that makes sense for the pandemic.

Our solution was to soft launch Red Bull Mobile Data for Red Bull athletes, one of the rare groups that could still benefit from the app’s features at the time. As the world gradually reopened to travel, we expanded app access to the general public. Red Bull Mobile Data has been fully operational in app stores for over two years.

We continued support in further markets, always tailoring the approach to the local realities and preferences. In this way, we have supported the launches in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Poland.

What has been accomplished during our collaboration since 2019?

  • Data analytics.
  • Co-creation of a growth strategy.
  • Co-creation of requirements for all the projects.
  • UX and UI wireframe co-creation.
  • Android and iOS App development.
  • Development of the admin panel and backend.
  • Integrations with local Telecom IT systems.
  • We are still continuing post-launch support and the implementation of additional new features.
  • Several additional app projects in other markets.

Project result:

Collaborating with Red Bull has been an exciting journey. We have demonstrated our team’s capabilities in delivering complex self-care apps with hundreds of integrations within agreed timelines while maintaining high energy, enthusiasm, and quality.

Over a million users have used our developed solutions across different Red Bull Mobile markets.
