The Population ProjectThe Population Project is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to creating a database containing the full names, places, and dates of birth of every living individual. The organization had to figure out an effective method for collecting, verifying, and analysing data on a global scale.
Our solution to this challenge was to create Roamy, a tool designed to sort through and interpret vast amounts of online data with remarkable speed and accuracy. Roamy was also designed to adapt and grow to keep up with the ever-changing landscape of global data collection and analysis.
Roamy embarked on its journey in March 2023 with a clear mission: to develop an intelligent system capable of searching the Internet for records of living individuals. This ambitious project aimed to analyse PDF and Excel documents, along with websites that resemble databases.
Initially, Roamy’s ability to identify valuable data was unreliable without AI. It soon became apparent that advanced technology was necessary to enhance its capabilities.
By integrating cutting-edge AI, we significantly improved Roamy’s judgment accuracy to approximately 80%. It’s worth noting that artificial intelligence has enabled us to teach the algorithm our definition of “useful,” which has greatly contributed to Roamy’s performance.
Roamy encountered a significant challenge in managing vast amounts of information while maintaining smooth operations. To address this, we implemented innovative solutions that allow Roamy to efficiently process and store data without experiencing slowdowns.
We introduced systems to quickly search through information and temporarily store frequently accessed data, freeing up resources for more demanding tasks like analysing documents and websites, creating previews, and avoiding duplicates.
These improvements have transformed Roamy into a powerful and reliable tool, now actively used by The Population Project’s team, including its founder, Antoine Bello, and our specialised team in Madagascar.
Roamy is the tool created for The Population Project to gather data on all living humans from the internet. It’s incredibly efficient and easy to use, and new features are added every month. To date, Roamy has gathered over 10 million valid records of living individuals, employed AI to analyse over 30,000 documents, and scrutinised more than 400,000 documents and websites since its launch.
