Warmeston: supporting a pellet producer’s sustainability journey

Warmeston is Estonia’s premium pellet producer for the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. Sustainability has always played an important role in the company, which is why Warmeston turned to us to help articulate their ambitious plans, measure the carbon footprint of their pellets, and publish their first sustainability report.
Project Essence:
Initially, we helped Warmeston define their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Since then, we have conducted an annual carbon footprint analysis, following Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) principles and adhering to two internationally recognised ISO standards (ISO 14040:2006 and ISO 14044:2006).
The carbon footprint assessment covered all four of Warmeston’s pellet plants. It included raw material inputs and their transportation, resource use in the production process, pellet transport to the customer, and much more. Joint workshops were held with the client to define the strategic directions of Warmeston’s sustainability journey. This involved selecting priority sustainable development goals and formulating the company’s core values.

Results:
The carbon footprint assessment and the developed sustainability framework culminated in a comprehensive sustainability report for 2020. It provided an overview of the company, described its products and production process, and summarised the carbon footprint assessment.
For two consecutive years following the initial project, Warmeston requested an update of their annual carbon footprint assessment and the preparation of two additional sustainability reports. This has enabled the company to track changes in its carbon footprint and identify their causes. It also allowed the client to address the emissions generated by the company and find solutions for moving towards reducing its climate impact.
