As a relatively young ESA member state, Hungary lacked a structured support system for promising early-stage space-sector startups. There was no mechanism in place that could simultaneously build up startups’ business and technological maturity while laying the foundations of a domestic space industry ecosystem.
ESA BIC Hungary: Investing in the Future of Hungary’s Space Industry
Client Overview:
The ESA Business Incubation Center program supports space-industry startups in bringing their ideas to life across 23 European countries. Since its launch, more than 2,100 startups have gone through the program, with Hungary, run by Civitta Hungary (formerly Design Terminal), having completed 25 incubations to date. Throughout the program, we support companies with business mentoring, technological consulting, and funding.

Our Approach:
Our team took over management of the ESA BIC Hungary program in 2021. The program is based on three pillars:
- IDEATE pillar helps entrepreneurs at the very earliest stage validate their idea and precisely define the problem they’re solving.
- INCUBATE pillar supports more mature startups with business workshops, personalized technical and legal mentoring, and lab access for prototype development.
- LEARN & INSPIRE pillar raises awareness of the opportunities the space industry offers among entrepreneurs, SMEs, and research institutes through open events.
Every incubated team receives 50 hours of business consulting, 20 hours of technical mentoring, and 10 hours of legal mentoring, along with monthly OKR-based evaluations, access to coworking space, and sessions with investors. Teams that succeed in the program can secure up to €60,000 in non-repayable funding.
Results & Impact:
As a result of the program, Hungary’s first civilian space research competence center was established, and equity-free startup funding in the space sector has become a regular, ongoing opportunity.
